Kanye emailed Kim to let her know that ‘big sunglasses are out’, and tiny sunglasses are in. So, obviously, instagram is now flooded with skinny sunglasses. Many of which are even too skinny to look through, they just balance on the tip of the nose. But you know what? I’m not mad at that. I’ve never been one to subscribe only to practical fashion- that’s no fun. There’s also nothing wrong with the sudden spike in the trend. It was bound to happen after Rihanna appeared on the Cannes red carpet in her Andy Wolf pair. I tapped in to the trend too.
What is a problem though, is throwing out all your old sunglasses. I haven’t, I will never. Because, trends are just that….trends. They are fun and cool to incorporate into the mix of what we already own. Even despite how expensive and wasteful it gets to throw out items that Kanye declares, ‘so out’, fashion becomes awfully boring when everyone is out here running around looking like a mini-Kardashian.
True style is having fun with trends (if you please) but never letting them dictate your entire style philosophy. The trend will be gone in a few years and even if it manages to stick around for over a decade, like skinny jeans and crop tops, it’s antithesis will also come back in trend.
Honestly, it would be great to go back to a time where everyone didn’t look the same and seasonal style wasn’t almost entirely determined by a few power players in the entertainment industry. If you want to wear sunglasses so big that they cover your entire face, for the love of style, please go ahead and do so.
